When jazz legend Rahsaan Roland Kirk died in the 1970s, he left his wife Dorthaan with three children and no job. She turned her contacts in the jazz world into a career, including playing a pivotal role in the start up of WBGO Jazz Radio in Newark, NJ. Now the NEA has honored Kirk with a Jazz Advocate award.
